About Unretired Doug
Unretired Doug is where I document my exploration of online income, self-publishing, and digital side projects after leaving my 9-to-5 career.
Like many people approaching retirement, I began wondering what it would be like to build something of my own online — something flexible, creative, and independent of traditional employment.
For years I poked around the edges of internet business whenever I had spare time. But until recently, I didn’t have enough space in my schedule to really dig in.
Now I do.
This site is my place to explore what actually works — and to share what I learn along the way.
I’m not a financial advisor, a tax professional, or someone who built a million-dollar online business. I’m a retired guy who started asking questions about how to stay active and earn a little extra income without getting taken advantage of — and discovered there weren’t enough trustworthy, straightforward resources for people like me. So I’m building one as I go. Everything here reflects what I’ve actually tried, researched, or learned the hard way. When something is above my pay grade, I’ll tell you — and point you to someone qualified.
One thing I’ve learned quickly: before you earn your first dollar in retirement, it pays to understand how that income might affect you. Social Security benefits, Medicare premiums, and taxes can all be touched by new earnings in ways that may catch people off guard.
I’m not qualified to give tax or financial advice—and I won’t pretend to be. But I do strongly recommend thinking through how added income could affect you, and considering guidance from qualified professionals if needed, so you can plan ahead for things like taxes or other obligations.
What You’ll Find Here
If you’re curious about earning income online — especially after a career change or retirement — you’ll find a wide range of ideas here. Some examples include:
- Affiliate marketing
- Self-publishing (especially Amazon KDP)
- Simple digital products
- Practical online tools and platforms
- Building a basic web presence that you control
Different people are interested in different paths, so I explore several models and explain how they work.
My goal is to help you understand what’s possible, what’s realistic, and where beginners should start.
The Philosophy Behind This Site
The internet is full of opportunity — but it’s also full of hype.
You’ll see plenty of promises like:
“Make $10,000 this month with no skills, no effort, and no experience.”
If that were really possible, everyone would be doing it.
Instead, I focus on practical, sustainable approaches that real people can learn and build over time. That means I’ll talk honestly about things like:
- Which ideas are beginner-friendly
- Which ones require experience or technical skills
- Which opportunities are overhyped or unrealistic
- Which platforms and tools are actually reliable
In other words: separating signal from noise.
Why I Emphasize Owning Your Platform
One lesson becomes clear very quickly when exploring online business:
You should build your presence on platforms you control whenever possible.
Social media platforms can be useful, but they can also change rules overnight or disappear entirely. That’s why I often emphasize:
- Having your own website
- Using established, reliable service providers
- Building skills that transfer across platforms
These foundations make it much easier to build something that lasts.
Learning in Public
Unretired Doug isn’t a “guru” site.
I’m not here to pretend I have every answer. Instead, I’m documenting my own journey as I learn more about online business — sharing tools, methods, and lessons along the way. That includes the things that don’t work, not just the wins.
Sometimes I’ll recommend resources I find useful.
Sometimes I’ll explain why certain opportunities don’t make sense for beginners.
Either way, the goal is simple:
Clear information that helps people make smarter decisions online.
